She is an environmentalist who worked on international environmental health and sustainability issues, among other things like <a href="http://www.greenpeace.org/international/en/" target="_blank">Greenpeace International</a>, <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.no-burn.org/index.php" target="_blank">Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives</a> (GAIA) and others.</p>

<p>This project has, so far, 2 seasons, the first with 7 short animated videos explaining some of our everyday environmental, social and economic problems and how they&#8217;re related to one another. The second season is more focused on what is behind these social, environmental and economical problems and how we can act on them.</p>
<p>Season 1</p>
<p>The very first movie is &#8220;The Story of Stuff&#8221;, released in December of 2007, and it basically talks about consumism. How our urge to always have new things affect the world&#8217;s nature, those who manuracutre and produce them  and ourselves.</p>

<p>Released on December of 2009, the second video is &#8220;The Story of Cap &amp; Trade&#8221;, and it explains the problems of this market-based approach to control pollution and reduce the emission of pollutants.</p>

<p>The third video is &#8220;The Story of Bottled Water&#8221;, and it was released on March of 2010. This animation talks about the reasons that drive us to preffer bottled water over tap water, and the waste problems that comes with it.</p>

<p>&#8220;The Story of Cosmetics&#8221;, released on July of 2010, to me is the scariest video so far. It talks about the chemicals in our personal care products and to me, it&#8217;s scary because it almost feels like another &#8220;theory of conspiracy&#8221;, the only problem is that it sounds too real and logic to be just a theory&#8230;</p>

<p>Finally, the last video, &#8220;The Story of Electronics&#8221;, released on November of 2010 talks about how the industry produces electronics to not last in order to make us, the consumers, buy more, and, therefore, dispose and pollute more.</p>

<p>Season 2</p>
<p>The first video of the season 2 is &#8220;The Story of Citizens United v Fec&#8221;, and it&#8217;s about politics and how we, people, are losing (or have lost) control over the democracy for corporations.</p>

<p>&#8220;The Story of Subsidies&#8221; is the next video, and it&#8217;s supposed to come out over the Fall of 2010. I&#8217;ll make sure to post it here as soon as it&#8217;s available. This last animation is about government fundings on unsustainable policies that support the very same destructive economic model we live in, instead of investing on ways and projects to improve our quality of life as a society.</p>

<p>So far I only had one class, and it was amazing. This woman is terrific. I&#8217;ll post here some of the things she brings to class. And this is the very first one.</p>
<p>Have you ever heard anything about Biomimicry? Well, till this past monday, I haven&#8217;t. Biomimicry is nothing more, nothing less than the study and observation of nature&#8217;s best ideas and characteristics in order to imitate it&#8217;s designs and processes to solve human problems and improve our technology in order to have better and more efficient results.</p>
<p>Alexandra showed us a video of it from TED Talks. TED is a small nonprofit conference devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading about Technology, Entertainment and Design. It started in 1984 and the very first one was in San Francisco, California. They believe in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and the world. That&#8217;s why they built a clearinghouse to offer free knowledge and inspiration from the world&#8217;s most inspired thinkers. They have many different actions with two annual conferences &#8212; the TED Conference in Long Beach and Palm Springs each spring, and the TEDGlobal conference in Oxford UK each summer &#8212; TED includes the award-winning TEDTalks video site, the Open Translation Project and Open TV Project, the inspiring TED Fellows and TEDx programs, and the annual TED Prize. You can read and watch the videos about it on their <a href="http://www.ted.com/" target="_blank">website</a>.</p>

Under Hungarian law, the cabinet has the right to declare a state of emergency for a period of two weeks. The parliament is required to vote to expand the direction. And that's exactly what happened this Monday, the 19th. Parliament voted to retain the state of emergency in the three counties until the end of the year.


European Union Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva called the response of the Hungarian authorities to the crisis "excellent " at a Budapest news conference. She is in Hungary to ascertain what professional help Hungary still needs to mitigate the consequences of the disaster as well as to discuss Hungary's role as European Union president, starting in January 2011.

<p>This red mud is usually kept in ponds or lakes specially designed for that purpose and it contains substances like lead, iron, titanium, sodium hydroxide, silica and aluminum, therefore, it is very dangerous and toxic. Some of the health problems it can cause are chemical burns, dangerous because they are not immediately visible or felt and may be very deep and only seem superficial. The only way to prevent burns in case of contact with the substance is to rinse it thoroughly with water.</p>
<p>The spill was caused by a hole of over 25 meters in a tank factory. The deluge came from a 10-hectare storage pool.</p>

<p>This is the worst chemical accident in Hungary’s history, according to the state secretary for the environment ministry, Zoltan Illés. At least nine people died and 100 are injured and 50 are hospitalized.</p>
<p>The flood happened 102.53 miles (165Km) from the capital, Budapest. The flood is estimated at about one million cubic meters in a 40km² area (about 9884 ac) and it forced about 500 residents to evacuate.</p>

<p>The flood got 2 meters high in the city of Kolontár, the one that got more affected. Most of those people will not return home because the environmental hazard is too great and nobody could guarantee their safety.</p>
<p>The spills will affect not only the waterways, but also the agriculture. Part of the soil will have to be removed along with the plaster on the outside of resident&#8217;s homes unless the mud is thoroughly washed off. Residents have been advised to not eat from crops that came into contact with the mud.</p>
<p>Despite the efforts in spreading vinegar, calcium nitrates and magnesium nitrates through the Marcal River and others in an effort to neutralize the highly corrosive mud and keep it from reaching the Danube river,  the chemicals reached it two days after the spills started. The Danube river is the biggest river in Europe. It cuts 6 other countries: Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Moldova. Also to neutralize the alkalinity of the contaminated areas, authorities poured gypsum over the land.</p>
<p>The emergency crews launched from airplanes plaster and acid in the Danube river and its tributaries to neutralize the effects of toxic alcaline sludge and avoid heavy metals and alkaline substances to travel downstream.</p>
<p>At least the mud&#8217;s PH dropped from 13 (which is very alcaline and dangerous) to 9.2. However, the normal no higher than 8.</p>

<p>On Saturday (Oct, 9th), a new crack of 47 cm wide ( aprox. 18 inches) was discovered in one of the walls. That was a threat of a new toxic spill. Illés declaired that a new spill was &#8220;inevitble&#8221; and a 600 metres barrier is being built to prevent a new runoff. Four thousand people and three hundred machines are working to prevent another tragedy. There are still 2.5 million tons of toxic waste remaining in the tank damaged.</p>
<p>The red mud is part of tailings group, resulted by mineral extraction industry  through ores process and, therefore, composed of very thin particles that contained the mineral of interest or is the result from grinding of rocks.</p>
<p>The cause of the spill is still not known, however, there is a possibility that it might have been a human error because there&#8217;s no evidence that would suggest any natural cause.</p>
<p><strong>The Company</strong></p>
<p>The aluminum factory responsible for the spill is <a title="Company's Website" href="http://english.mal.hu/Engine.aspx" target="_blank">MAL Magyar Alumínium</a>, and it’s located in the city of Ajka.</p>
<p>Initially, the company was private, and it&#8217;s managing director was Zoltan Bakonyi&#8217;s, whose father father, Arpad Baconyi owns 30 percent of MAL&#8217;s shares. Bakonyi son was the one to say that the mud was not toxic but that people &#8220;should not bathe in it,&#8221; while reassuring journalists about the negative impact it might have on MAL&#8217;s accounts.</p>
<p>Bakonyi was taken into custody for interrogation on the 11th and released on the 13th, when the judge ruled against charging him. The prosecutors couldn&#8217;t find elements enough to charge him formally.</p>
<p>He was charged with criminal negligence leading to a public catastrophe, suspicion of lack of warnings and rescue plans in case of accidents, death of people and environmental damage. The prosecution will appeal the court decision. If convicted, he could face a sentence of up to 10 years.</p>
<p>According to the Prime Minister Viktor Orban, the government took over Mal Zrt and the Hungarian Aluminum Production and Trade Company for the next two years. The hungarian parliament decided for the nacionalization with 366 against one and only 13  abstentions. MAL will now be directed by György Bakondi, head of the Hungarian civil protection and firefighter general and will report directly to the prime minister.</p>
<p>Zoltan Illés said the company might have a 73 million euro fine. However, with the nacionalization of the company it&#8217;s important to establish who will take over the costs, if the Estate, therefore, citizens, or the stakeholders. The Government said that since it wasn&#8217;t a &#8220;natural tragedy&#8221; but caused by &#8220;negligence&#8221;, it won&#8217;t be the &#8221;taxpayers to bear the costs, but those responsible for the disaster.</p>
<p>MAL is being accused of violating safety rules. They might have overloaded the reservoir causing a rupture in one of the tanks.</p>
<p>Even though the exact cause of the accident hasn&#8217;t been determined yet, the production at the alumina plant started on Oct 15th, eleven days after it started because, according to Orban, it&#8217;s in the public interest and necessary to save the jobs of thousands of workers.</p>
<p>A third official of the company was questioned on the 19th. Identified as Mrs. Jozsef F. The National Bureau of Investigation, she was in charge of the facility&#8217;s laboratory and environmental issues and had failed to design defensive measures to protect the lives and property of residents in case of a disaster.</p>
<p>Mrs. Jozsef is a suspect under the charges of endangerment and causing environmental damage.</p>
<p>According to Bakondi, (the new director, not Bakonyi the former chairmen)  there&#8217;s a need to reactivativate the power plant that fuels the plant because leaving it to cool would damage billion forints (Hungary&#8217;s official currency), and the government has a preliminary permission to do it. The power plant was reactivated on Friday, 15th, eleven days after the spills started.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>People</strong></span></p>
<p>Like I&#8217;ve said before, the residents were forced to evacuate and leave to family and friends houses in nearby places or improvised shelters in schools and stadiums.</p>
<p>In the village of Devecser, which has a population of 5,000, at least 220 families have been rendered homeless by the mud. The village has trains and buses prepared to evacuate the population.</p>
<p>The situation of Kolontar village is the very worse because it&#8217;s the closest to the tank. The village was reopened on Wednesday (Oct, 6th) to allow people to get in and look for their belongings, however, the threat of a new spill interrupted the proccess.</p>

<p>The saddest thing about all this is the fact that these people lost not only all their belongings but their money as well. Since hungarians don&#8217;t trust much the banking system, some might have kept all their savings at home.</p>
<p>For those overseas who wish to help the victims a  fund (Magyar Alap Kármentő abroad) to help victims of environmental disaster was announced and people all over the world can send donations.</p>

<p><span style="color:#99cc00;"><strong>Let&#8217;s just give it a thought..</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#6ed32b;">Disasters like this one in Hungary gives us the oportunity to think a little bit of our life style. MAL&#8217;s responsible because it was their reservoir that spilled. We dont know yet the exact causes yet, it could have been human error, natural cause or a mix of things. That is still a little too early to say. However, it&#8217;s important to think of people and the environment first, to have those as focus instead of &#8220;finding who to blame&#8221;. </span></p>
<p><span style="color:#6ed32b;">Once ANY disaster or problem happens, it doesn&#8217;t really matter what/who caused it. Yes, it IS crucial to understand what happened in order to prevent future accidents, but what I&#8217;m saying is just that it&#8217;s more important to find out a way to fix the problem, no matter what it takes or whom it hurts, than to point fingers and decide who&#8217;s responsible for them. </span></p>
<p><span style="color:#6ed32b;">People and environment should come first even if it means that someone or some company should pay for something they dont think they should take fully responsibility for. Sometimes, accidents are caused by multiple factors and it&#8217;s impossible to know exactly who is responsible for what and put all that in numbers. Therefore, the biggest matter is to fix the problem and try to stop and prevent greater damage. I&#8217;m saying this based on the Brazilian Environmental Law. </span></p>
<p><span style="color:#6ed32b;">So consequences apart, let&#8217;s think about the causes. Following the trace of thought above, yes, MAL is responsible for the accident. However, we, as consumers, also have our little part to blame. We all use aluminum on our everyday life. From the cars we drive to the sodas we drink, imitation jewelry, details on clothes shoes and clothing accessories among others. We&#8217;re all in contact with alluminum and never think of how it got to us, what kinds of processes it had to go through to get to our hands as we know it, as well as how much did it cost to the Earth and other people to get to us. No, that environmental and social aspect of the product is usually not taken into consideration when it&#8217;s price is estipulated.</span></p>
<p><span style="color:#6ed32b;"> Therefore, as consumers, it&#8217;s important that we aknowledge the social and environmental cost of the products we buy and take that in consideration when purchasing. Yes, recycling can diminish the natural recources extraction. However, recycling alone won&#8217;t solve the problem of waste and natural resources consumption if people keep buying just as much or even more than usual. </span></p>

<p>Among all water in the planet drinkable water is rare. Since 97.5% of the water is found in the ocean and is too salty to drink or use to water crops, which leaves us with only 2.5% of fresh water, with few dissolved salts. Yes, there is <a title="Link for the International Desalination Association" href="http://www.idadesal.org/default.aspx" target="_blank">desalination</a> technology to remove salt from sea water and have fresh water. This process is used by many countries and cities but it is really expensive. I can talk more about it on another post.</p>

<p>Since most fresh water is tied up in <a title="mass accumulation of snow and ice that move through landscape" href="http://nsidc.org/glaciers/" target="_blank">glaciers</a>, <a title="bodies of ice at the earth's poles more stagnant than glaciers" href="http://www.thewildclassroom.com/biomes/icecaps.html" target="_blank">icecaps</a> and <a href="http://www.whymap.org/cln_116/whymap/EN/Home/whymap__node.html?__nnn=true" target="_blank">underground aquifers</a>, just over 1 part in 10,000 of Earth’s water is easily accessible for human use.</p>

<p>Water constantly moves among the reservoirs via the <em><a title="water cycle animation" href="http://www.nwlg.org/resources/geog/hydro_cycle/hydro/cycle.htm" target="_blank">hydrologic cycle</a>. </em>As it does so it distributes heat, erodes mountain ranges, builds river deltas, maintains organisms and ecosystems, shapes civilizations, and also gives rise to political conflicts.</p>

<p>As water physically shapes Earth’s landscapes, fresh water systems support a large fraction of our planet’s organisms. Several freshwater ecosystem types can be thought of as the aquatic equivalents of <a title="areas under similar climate and temperature in which different species of plants and animals interact with one another and with the environment around them" href="http://www.thewildclassroom.com/biomes/index.html" target="_blank">biomes</a>.</p>

<p>On this post I will start talking about these freshwater systems. Despite the fact that they are not that many, there is a lot to talk about each of them, so I&#8217;ll talk about them one post at a time.</p>

<li>Underground aquifers</li>

<p><strong>Freshwater ecosystems &#8211; Rivers and Streams</strong></p>
<p><strong>Rivers and streams </strong>are formed by water from rain, snowmelt, or springs that run downhill and converge where the land dips lowest, forming streams, creeks, or brooks. Such water courses merge into rivers which, eventually, reach the ocean or a landlocked water body.</p>

<p>The landscape is shaped by the rivers and areas flooded by rivers periodically are said to be within the river’s floodplain.</p>
<p>Agriculture thrives in floodplains because its soil is fertile due to the deposition of silt from floodings.</p>

<p>Waters of rivers and streams host diverse <a title="a group of interacting species living in the same place" href="http://www.globalchange.umich.edu/globalchange1/current/lectures/ecol_com/ecol_com.html" target="_blank">ecological communities</a> and riparian (riverside) forests, that are productive and species-rich.</p>
<p>Like any other ecosystem, the rivers and riparian forests depend on each other to survive. Without the river and stream the soil isn’t fertile enough for the riverside forest to exist.</p>

<p>The riverside forest, on its turn, is important to the river because:</p>
<p><strong>1. Riparian forests maintain the high water quality needed for supplying drinking water and maintaining diverse forms of aquatic life.</strong></p>
<p><a title="colourless, odourless, tasteless gas that constitutes all living tissues and 78% of Earth's atmosphere. Essential element for life and in excess can cause damage to human life and the environment " href="http://www.lenntech.com/periodic/elements/n.htm" target="_blank">Nitrogen</a> and <a title="essential element for the life of organisms. In the natural world it's found as phosphates. In excess or shortage, may cause health and environmental problems" href="http://www.lenntech.com/periodic/elements/p.htm" target="_blank">phosphorus</a> are found naturally in the environment and are necessary for aquatic plants and algae to grow and reproduce. However, excess nitrogen and phosphorus can be very damaging to the aquatic environment.</p>
<p>Because of human activities phosphorus and nitrogen are also found in fertilizers, septic leachate, sewage treatment plants, <a title="when top soil is replaced by impervious surfaces the rainwater has to be collected by storm sewers. The storm sewers send the water runoff to water bodies that may flood for not being prepared to receive the extra flow of water" href="http://www.cee.vt.edu/ewr/environmental/teach/gwprimer/group18/urbanr.htm#causes" target="_blank">urban runoff</a>, detergents, <a title="unpaved roads have deposits of compacted sediments. They are responsible for the matter of emissions that are very harmful to the human health and the environment" href="http://www.ehp.niehs.nih.gov/members/2003/111-16/innovations.html" target="_blank">road dust</a>, grass clippings, and yard debris.</p>
<p>When such nutrients are found in excess they can cause the rapid growth of algae and aquatic plants, which can reduce the amount of light penetrating the water and provoke death to aquatic plants and fishes. This process is called eutrophication.</p>

<p>When this algae dies, it’s decomposed by bacteria that use oxygen, lowering the amount of oxygen in the water. The depletion of oxygen causes taste and odor problems in drinking water and can also cause fish and other aquatic organisms to die or move.</p>
<p>Organisms that thrive in low oxygen environments release<a title="colorless gas with a rotten-egg odor. Emitted mostly from natural sources but also from human activities" href="http://www.health.state.ny.us/environmental/chemicals/hydrogen_sulfide/" target="_blank"> hydrogen sulfate</a> and <a title="a greenhouse gas more effective in trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. Emitted from natural and human-influenced sources it is an important energy source" href="http://www.epa.gov/methane/" target="_blank">methane</a>, chemicals that can be toxic to aquatic life and can compound the problem of an oxygen-deprived environment.</p>

<p><strong>2. Riparian forests act as nutrient filters, sinks and transformers to help reduce the amount of nutrients reaching streams. Since most phosphorous is bound to small soil particles and both are filtered down, the remaining that is not soil bound is not removed by filtration, but by other mechanisms:</strong></p>
<p>Riparian forests function as a nutrient sink. They sequester nitrogen and phosphorus in biomass and improve the ability of soils to hold nutrients by adding organic material to the soil. As water flows over the surface or as <a title="groundwater flash animation" href="http://earthguide.ucsd.edu/earthguide/diagrams/groundwater/index.html" target="_blank">groundwater</a> moves within the <a title="entire area where roots are growing below the plant" href="http://science.jrank.org/pages/5924/Root-System.html" target="_blank">root zone</a> of riparian plants, the plants actively uptake nutrients and absorb them. This plant material is removed from the riparian forest when it’s eaten or incorporated into animal biomass.</p>

<p>Studies have shown that riparian forests can remove a lot of nitrate (a form of nitrogen) and</p>
<p>phosphorus from agricultural runoff. The storage of these nutrients in the riparian forests reduces the amount of nutrients reaching streams and lakes. I would like to give you an idea in numbers for the amount of nutrients removed by the riparian forests, but these numbers seem to vary from area to area, influenced by the type of soil, climate, types of flora and other characteristics.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.extension.iastate.edu/Publications/PM1507.pdf" target="_blank">Here</a> is a study from Iowa State University; and <a href="http://tctcwa.org/Documents/TheImportanceofRiparianForests.pdf" target="_blank">here</a> an article about the importance of riparian forests that are examples of these studies for the amount of nutrients removed by the forests.</p>
<p>Riparian forests act as nutrient <a href="http://na.fs.fed.us/spfo/pubs/n_resource/buffer/part6.htm" target="_blank">transformers</a> as they change the chemical composition of nutrient compounds. When soil moisture is high enough to create <a title="meaning low or no presence of oxygen in the environment" href="http://">anaerobic conditions</a> in surface soil layers, bacteria can convert dissolved nitrate do gaseous nitrogen, releasing it safely into the atmosphere and reducing the amount reaching streams.</p>

<p>They are also capable of transforming toxic chemical and pesticides to nontoxic forms through microbiological decomposition, oxidation, reduction, hydrolysis, and solar oxidation.</p>
<p><strong>3. The conservation of riparian forest is important in stabilizing stream banks, reducing erosion, and providing high quality wildlife habitat.</strong></p>
<p>Stream banks are stabilized by the riparian forests deep root systems, which hold the soil in place and provide a degree of roughness capable of slowing runoff velocities and spreading flow during storms.</p>
<p>Riparian forests help prevent erosion of <a href="http://www.derm.qld.gov.au/factsheets/pdf/river/r30.pdf" target="_blank">stream banks</a> and the production of sediments. Without forest buffers, stream flow scours the streambed and banks leading to bank erosion and channel straightening. Straight channels lead to accelerated stream flow velocity and additional stream bank erosion, leading to the development of wide shallow streams with elevated temperatures and a low diversity of aquatic species.</p>

<p><strong>4. Riparian forest helps on the maintenance of proper stream temperature and a healthy ecosystem.</strong></p>
<p>Rriparian forest forms a canopy, that shades the stream. The shade moderates water temperature and protects it against fluctuations in temperature that can be detrimental to the stream ecosystem’s health.</p>
<p>Elevated temperatures reduce the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water and reduce fish spawning and survival. Studies have shown that, for example, when stream surface shade is reduced to 35%, trout population drop as much as 85%.</p>
<p>The amount of light reaching the stream also affect the types of algae produced in the stream. The type of algae growing in wooded areas are different from the ones in the open sunny areas. Fish eat <a title="help maintain the health of the water ecosystem by eating bacteria and dead, decaying plants and animals. They are important water quality/pollution indicators" href="http://www.dnr.state.md.us/streams/pubs/freshwater.html" target="_blank">macroinvertebrates</a> and they prefer to eat the algae growing in wooden areas –<a title="abundant in marine and freshwater ecosystems. They are responsible fore all organic carbon fixation on the planet and are a major source of atmospheric oxygen." href="http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/chromista/bacillariophyta.html" target="_blank">diatoms</a>- to the ones in sunny areas –<a title="non-toxic algae important for the environment. They become a problem when their numbers increase in quantity over the amount of nutrients available" href="http://www.albertasummervillages.org/reference%20guide/Chapter%20PDFs/Filamentous%20Algae.pdf" target="_blank">filamentous green</a>-. Because of that, the amount of sun defines the amount of each type of algae to grow and the types of food available for fish and other aquatic organisms.</p>

<p>The many kinds of plants like grasses, shrubs, vines and trees grow in the riparian forests providing important habitats because they make available nesting areas for birds and other animals as well as a variety of food items for wildlife.</p>
<p>The unbroken riparian forest also provides a pathway called<a title="strip of vegetation that allows the movement of wildlife or other organisms between areas" href="http://www.reliableprosperity.net/wildlife_corridors.html" target="_blank"> ecological or wildlife corridor</a>, important for the movement and migration of animals. It works as a connection between isolated blocks of forests, important to keep a high <a title="biodiversity is the variety of all life in a given area" href="http://">bio</a> and <a title="Gene variability of a specie. <p>Even the woody debris that falls into the stream has its’ importance since it provides cover for fish and invertebrates. The debris forms debris dams that form pools providing space, cover, protection from high flow and a diversity of microenvironments for fish and other aquatic life.</p>
<p>Debris dams also block the transport of sediment and smaller litter materials. Such delay in transport of organic material down stream allows sufficient time for aquatic organisms to utilize it. The slowing of transport helps protect the sudden deposition of sediments down stream. There are studies that have shown a link between the presence of large woody debris and habitat quality, population growth of fish, and a diversity of fish and other aquatic organisms. Since fish also have non-aquatic predators, their presence attracts other animals, again increasing the biodiversity.</p>

<p>The woody debris, stems, leaves, buds, flowers, etc., that fall into the stream from riparian forest form the basis of the aquatic food chain. This organic material is broken down into small pieces by aquatic insect larvae, crayfish and other invertebrates; bacteria and fungi breaks these small pieces into very fine material known as detritus, used for food by many small aquatic animals that are food for bigger aquatic animals. It’s a very delicate balanced environment, everything is interconnected. If something happens on one end everything else is affected as well.</p>

<p><strong>6. Riparian forest is important in stabilizing stream banks, reducing erosion, and providing high quality wildlife habitat.</strong></p>
<p>As water passes through a riparian area, the roughness of the forest floor and the vegetation help reduce the energy of the water flow allowing some of the water to infiltrate into the ground to be stored in wetlands and reduce downstream flooding, reaching groundwater, and maintaining stream base flow during the summer months.</p>
<p>Storm water treatment options that integrate natural systems and <a href="http://www.fxbrowne.com/html/gs-facts/gs-factsheet05v9.pdf" target="_blank">bioretention</a> areas, such as riparian forests, are less expensive to construct than storm drain systems and provide better environmental results. <a href="http://www.bioretention.com/index.html" target="_blank">Here</a> is a website that almost teaches you to make a bioretention system.</p>
<p>Riparian forests can save money by providing protection from floods and management of storm waters. Storm water treatment options that integrate natural systems and bio-retention areas, like riparian forests, are less expensive to construct than storm drain systems</p>
<p>* In the <a title="Read more about the flood" href="http://www.nwrfc.noaa.gov/floods/papers/oh_2/great.htm" target="_blank">flood of 1993 in the Midwest</a>, the forested floodplain areas had less damage to the levee system and river than grass or farmland areas. <p><strong>7. Riparian forests function as efficient sediment filtering systems that are environmentally sound and economically advantageous.</strong></p>
<p>Sediment is carried to streams from sources such as cropland erosion, pasture erosion, range erosion, road and construction sites, and stream bank deterioration.</p>
<p>The problem is that sediment suspended in water can reduce the penetration of sunlight into the stream and affect the growth of aquatic plants;</p>
<p>Since sediment can make the water cloudy, aquatic organisms may have some difficulty to find food and fish can have their gills clogged or damaged;</p>
<p>When sediment gets deposited on the stream bottom it affects the bottom dwelling fish and insects and it also destroy fish spawning areas.</p>
<p>Large sediment deposits can fill in stream channels and increase the potential for flooding</p>
<p>Help reduce the amount of sediment reaching streams because sediment settles out when the speed of water flow is reduced as it enters the riparian forest due to contact with vegetation, decaying leaves, twigs, and branches. In addition to that, sediment is removed as water runoff and sediment infiltrate into and are incorporated into the porous forest floor. Mature riparian forests can reduce the sediment load of water flowing from upland crop fields by eighty percent.</p>

Ocean water is salty primarily becase rivers and winds carry sediments and sals from the continents into the ocean. Evaporation then removes pure water, leaving a higher concentration of salts. If we were able to evporate all the water from the ocean, the world&#8217;s ocean basins would be covered with a layer of dried salt 63m (207 ft) thick.</p>
<p>Surface waters of the oceans are warmer than subsurface waters because the sun heat them and because warmer water is less dense. Deepbelow the surface, water is dense and sluggish, unaffected by winds and storms, sunlight, and daily temperature fluctuations. Ocen water moves in currents, vast riverlike flows that move in the upper 400m of water, horizontally and for great distances. Wind, solar heating and coling, gravity, density differences, and the Coriolis effect drive the global system of ocean currents. hese lon lasting patterns influence global climate, El Niño andLa Niña events, and navigation and human history.</p>

<li><strong>Deep ocean</strong> &#8211; little-known, the deep ocean&#8217;s animals have adapted to deal with extreme water pressures and to live in th dark without food from photosynthesizers. Some of these bizarre-looking creatures scavenge carcasses or detritus that fall from above.</li>

Kelp forests supply shelter an food for invertebrates and fish, which in turn provide food for predators such as seals, sharks, and seaotters. Kelp forests also absorb wave energy and protect shorelines from erosion. People derive alginates from kelp, which serve as thickeners in a wide range of consumer prducts, from cosmetics to foods to pains to paper to soaps.</li>

Corals attach to rock of existing reef nd capture passing food with stinging tentacles. They also derive nouishment from symbiotic algae, known as <em>zooxanthellae, </em>that inhabit their bodies and produce food through photosynthesis. Most corals are colonial, and the colorful surface of  coral reef consists of thousands of millions of densely packed individuals. As corals die, their skeletons remain part o the reef while new corals grow atop them, increasing the reef&#8217;s size. They absorb wave energy, protect shorelines, and host as much biodiversity as any other type of ecosysem. The likely rason is that coral reefs provide complex physical structure in shallow nearshore waters, which are regions of high primary productivity. Besides the staggering diversity of anemones, sponges, hydroids, tubeworms, and other sessile invertebrates, innumerable molluscs, crustaceans, flatworms, seastars, and urchins patrol the reefs, and thousans of fish species fnd food and shelter in reefnooks and crannies. Larger predators, such as grouper and mora eels, feed on the smaller fish.</li>

Intertidal organisms spend part of each day submerged in water, part of the day exposed to the air and sun, and part of the day being lashed by waves. Safeguarding the quality of water involves another collection of environmental and human health dilemmas. Developed nations have made admirable advances in clearing up <a href="http://www.umich.edu/~gs265/society/waterpollution.htm">water pollution</a> over the past few decades. Still, the World Commission on Water recently concluded that over half the world’s major rivers are “seriously depleted and polluted, degrading and poisoning the surrounding ecosystems, threatening the health and livelihood of people who depend on them”.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0 0 10pt;">The term pollution describes the release of matter or energy into the environment that causes undesirable impact on the health and well-being of people or other organisms. Pollution can affect water, air or soil, and can be:</p>
<ul>
<li>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0 0 10pt;">Physical  – scientists use temperature, color and turbidity, which measures the density of suspended particles in a water sample. Fast-moving rivers that cut through arid or eroded landscapes, such as the Colorado River, carry a great deal of sediment and are turbid and muddy-looking as a result. If scientists can measure only one parameter, they will often choose turbidity, because it tends to correlate with many others and is thus a good indicator of overall water quality.</div>
</li>
<li>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0 0 10pt;">Chemical –nutrients concentrations, pH, taste and odor, and hardness. Hard water contains high concentrations of calcium and magnesium ions, prevents soap from lathering, and leaves chalky deposits behind when heated or boiled. An important characteristic is dissolved oxygen content, which is an indicator of aquatic ecosystem health because surface waters that are low in dissolved oxygen support less aquatic life.</div>
</li>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0 0 10pt;">Biological – is the presence of fecal coliform bacteria, which indicates contamination by human waste and suggest the presence of other disease-causing organisms. Scientists can identified biological pollution using algae and aquatic invertebrates.</div>

<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst" style="margin:0;"><a href="http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/02/090219141533.htm">Nutrient pollution</a> – is the pollution from fertilizers and other sources that can lead to <a href="http://http://coseenow.net/2008/11/eutrophication-animation/">eutrophication</a> and hypoxia in coastal marine areas.</div>

<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst" style="margin:0;"><a href="http://www.lenntech.com/water-disinfection/waterborne-diseases-contagion.htm">Pathogens and waterborne diseases</a> – disease-causing organisms (pathogenic viruses, protists, and bacteria) can enter drinking water supplies when these are contaminated with human waste or with animal waste from feedlots. Biological pollution by pathogens causes more human health problems than any other type of water pollution. Treating sewage constitutes one approach for reducing health risks. Another is using chemical or other means to disinfect drinking water. Personal hygiene is vital, as is government enforcement of regulations to ensure the cleanliness of food production, processing, and distribution.</div>

<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst" style="margin:0;"><a href="http://www.ec.gc.ca/water/en/manage/poll/e_legacy.htm">Toxic chemicals</a> – our waterways have become polluted with toxic organic substances of our own making, including pesticides, petroleum products, and other synthetic chemicals. Many of these can poison animal and plants, alter aquatic ecosystems, and cause an array of human health problems, including cancer. Toxic metals such as arsenic, lead, and mercury, as well as acids from acid precipitation and from acid drainage from mining sites, also cause negative impacts on human health and the environment. Legislation and enforcing stricter regulations of industry can help reduce releases of toxic chemicals. We can also modify our industrial process and our purchasing decisions to rely less on these substances.</div>

Mining, clear cutting, overgrazing, land clearing for housing development, and tilling of farm fields all expose soil to wind and water erosion. Some water bodies, such as the Colorado River and China’s Yellow River, are naturally sediment-rich, but many others are not. When a clear-water river receives a heavy influx of eroded sediment, aquatic habitat can change dramatically, and fish adapted to clear-water environments may not be able to adjust. We can reduce sediment pollution by better managing farms and forests and by avoiding large-scale disturbance of vegetation.</div>

<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst" style="margin:0;"><a href="http://www.rpi.edu/dept/chem-eng/Biotech-Environ/Environmental/THERMAL/tte1.htm">Thermal pollution</a> – water’s ability to hold dissolved oxygen decreases as temperature rises, so some aquatic organisms may die when human activities heat water. When we withdraw water from a river and use it to cool an industrial facility, we transfer heat energy from the facility back into the river where the water is returned. The temperature might also be raised by removing streamside vegetation that shades water. Too little heat can also cause problems.  On the Colorado and other dammed rivers, water at the bottoms of reservoirs is colder than water at the surface. When dam operators release water from the depths of a reservoir, downstream water temperatures drop suddenly. In the Colorado’s system, these low water temperatures have favored cold-loving invasive trout over and endangered native species of suckerfish.</div>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Ok, after talking a lot about soil, rocks and agriculture, let&#8217;s talk a little bit about water.</p>
<p>I guess it&#8217;s not unknown that even though water is abundant, the water that we can drink is quire rare. If 97,5% of Earth&#8217;s water resides in the oceans and is too salty to drink or use to water crops, than it lasts only 2,5% of the type considered fresh, which is water with few dissolved salts. Since most fresh water is tied up in calaciers, icecaps, and underground <a href="http://www.gma.org/Katahdin/aquifer.html">aquifers</a>, just over 1 part in 10,000 of Earth&#8217;s water is easily accessible for human use.</p>
<p>Water constantly moves via the <strong><em><a href="http://earthguide.ucsd.edu/earthguide/diagrams/groundwater/index.html">hydrologic cycle</a></em></strong> and, as it moves, it redistributes heat, erodes mountain ranges, builds river deltas, maintains organisms and ecosystems, shapes civilizations, and gives rise to political conflicts.</p>
<p>The freshwater ecosystems are rich in life, and they are:</p>
<ul>
<li>Rivers and streams &#8211; water from rain, snowmelt,or springs runs downhill and converges where the land dips lowest, forming streams, creeks, or brooks. These water-courses merge into rivers;</li>
</ul>

<ul>
<li>Lakes and ponds &#8211; bodies of open standing water. Their physical conditions and the types of life within them vary with depth and the distance from shore.</li>
</ul>

<li>Marshes, swamps, and bogs &#8211; systems that combine elements of fresh water and dry land. They&#8217;re also called wetlands, and are very rich and productive.</li>
</ul>

<p>Groundwater is very important to the hydrologic cycle because the precipitation that reach Earth&#8217;s land surface and does not evaporate, flow into waterways, or get taken up by organisms infiltrates the surface. Most percolates downward through the soil to become groundwater.</p>
<p>Groundwater is contained within aquifers, porous, spongelike formations of rock, sand, or gravel that hold water. The world&#8217;s largest known aquifer is the Ogallala Aquifer, which underlines the Great Plains beneath eight US states from South Dakota to Texas. However, overpumping for irrigation has reduced this aquifer&#8217;s volume by nearly 10% so far -a volume equal to 18 years&#8217;worth of the entire flow of the Coloado River.</p>
<p>Unfortunatelly for us, different regions of the world possess vastly different amounts of groundwater, surface water, and precipitation. However, people are not distributed across the globe in accordance with water availability. Canada, for instance, has 20 times more water per citizan than does China; the Amazon River carries 15% of the world&#8217;s runoff, but its watershed holds less than half a percent of the world&#8217;s population. Many countries like Pakistan, Iran and Egypt face water shortages.</p>
<p>Because fresh water is distributed unevenly in time and space, it became necessary to erect  <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dam">dams</a> to store water, so that it may be distributed when needed. In India, monsoon storms can dump half of a region&#8217;s annual rain in just a few hours. Northwest China receivs three-fifths of its annual precipitation during 3 months, when crops do not need it.</p>

<p>We divert and deplete surface wter to suit our needs. Water from rivers, streams, lakes and ponds are diverted to homes, cities, and farm fields. The <a href="http://cpluhna.nau.edu/Change/waterdevelopment5.htm">Colorado River&#8217;s </a>water, for instance, is heavily diverted and utilized, in a way that after all the diversions comprised, just a trickle makes its way to the Gulf of California. There are some days when water does not reach the Gulf at all. This flow reduction has altered drastically the river and its once rich delta; plant communities were modified and populations of fish and aquatic invertebrates where wipped out, devastating fisheries.</p>

<p>We are depleting groundwater more than surface water because most aquifers recharge very slowly. Most groundwater use goes toward agriculure. We withdraw 70% more water for <a href="http://aboutenvironment.wordpress.com/2009/04/04/impacts-of-agriculture/">irrigation</a> today than in 1960, and since then, the amount of land under irrigation has doubled. Expansion of irrigated agriculture has kept pace with population growth. Irrigation can more than double crop yields by allowing farmers to apply water when and where it is needed. Still, most irrigation remains inefficient, and <a href="http://aboutenvironment.wordpress.com/category/soil/">overirrigatin leads to waterlogging and salinization</a>.</p>
<p>Worldwide today, 15-35% of irrigation withdrawals are thought to be unsustainable, and like <a href="http://www.waterencyclopedia.com/Oc-Po/Ogallala-Aquifer.html">Ogallala</a>, many aquifers are being drained as water is &#8220;mined&#8221; at rates faster than it is recharged. As aquifers are depleted, water tables drop. Groundwater becomes more difficult and expensive to extract, and eventually it may run out. To make the situation even worse, when groundwater is overpumped in coastal areas, salt water can intrude into aquifers, making water undrinkable; and as aquifers lose water, the land surface aboe may subside, that&#8217;s the reason why cities from Venice to Bangkok to Mexico City are slowly sinking, while streets buckle, buildings flood, and pipes break.</p>
<p>Still, there are some solutions to depletion of fresh water:</p>
<ul>
<li>To address the depletion, we can aim either to increase supply or to reduce demand, lowering demand is more difficult politically but will likely be necessary in the long term;</li>
<li>To increase supply in a giver area, people have transported water through pipes and aqueducts from areas where it is more plentiful or accessible. In many instances, water-poor regions have forcibly appopriated water from commmunities too weak to keep it for themselves. Los Angeles, for instance, grew by using water it appropriated from the Owens Valley, Mono Lake, and other rural regions of California. Becaouse of that, these area&#8217;s environments are desertified, crating dustbowls and devastating local economies.</li>
<li>Desalination  also may help. The process of &#8220;making&#8221; fresh water by removing salt from seawater or other water of marginal quality. However, desalination is expensve, requires large inputs of fossil fuel energy, and generates concentrated salty waste. Over 7,500 desalination facilities are operating worldwide. Most are in the Middle East, where water is scarce and oil is cheap.</li>
<li>To decrease demand farmers can improve efficiency by lining irrigation canals to prevent leaks, leveling fields to minimize runoff, and adopting efficient irrigation methods.</li>
<li>Choosing crops to match the land and climate in which they are being farmed can save huge amounts of water. Crops that require a great deal of water are cotton, rice and alfalfa are often planted in arid areas with government-subsidized irrigation. In this way, the true cost of water is not part of the cost of growing the crop.</li>

It is framed by the larger discussion of sustainability and the pressing economic and political issues of our world. In the broad context, sustainable architecture seeks to minimize the negative environmental impact of buildings by enhancing efficiency and moderation in the use of materials, energy, and development space.</p>

Since this is a new issue in Architecture, news firms specialized in sustainable architectures will open, where new researches will happen. And since the firms and the universities are connected,  new teachers at schools of architecture will be needed;</div>

<li>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal;margin:0;">Cost reduction through efficiency improvements and reduced energy and raw material inputs. Research for new equipments that use less energy, or use of different kinds of energy like solar and wind. Thinking about materials, if the US use a material made in US instead of a material made in China, there will be an energy reduction on the transportation process;</div>
</li>
<li>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:normal;margin:0;">Creation of additional added value. It means that you can even charge more for the project because it has a sustainable issue. Or not tlaking about money, if a firm is looking for a project for its building (if one considered sustainable topics and the other is not, it can be an advantage for the first one due to nowadays it&#8217;s importance for companies to have a social and environment concerns).</div>
</li>
</ul>

Abstract ideas based upon knowledge and study are transformed into workable solutions forged by real human contact, personal realization, and a gained appreciation for the culture. So, it is a partnership between students of architecture and community that works with social impact on local communities.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In this post I&#8217;m going to talk about feedlots and the positive and negative sides of it&#8217;s practice.</p>
<p>I&#8217;d like to make it clear that my goal here is not to make apology to vegetarianism, I don&#8217;t want to convince anyone to give up on eating meat, that&#8217;s not my place. That being said, let&#8217;s start!</p>
<p>Feedlots are also known as factory farms or concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), and they&#8217;re essentially huge waterhouses or pens designed to deliver energy-rich food to animals living at extremely high densities. Nowadays, over half our pork and poultry come from feedlots, as does much of our beef.</p>
<p>The positive side of feedlots are:</p>
<ul>
<li>Allow for greater production of food. This is necessary for a country with a level of meat consumption like the US &#8211; without entering the merit if the country consumes more meat than they should, let&#8217;s try to only deal with the facts;</li>
<li>They have one overcharging benefit for environmental quality: when cattle, sheep, goats, and other livestock are taken off the land and concentrated in feedlots, there is a reduction on the impacts they would otherwise exert on large portions of the landscape;</li>
</ul>
<p>The negative side of feedlots are:</p>
<ul>
<li>It&#8217;s waste can emit strong odors and pollute surface water and groundwater, because livestock produce prodigious amounts of feces and urine;</li>
<li>Poor <a href="http://www.mda.state.mn.us/protecting/conservation/practices/feedlotrunoff.htm">waste containment practices </a>might cause outbreaks of disease like <strong><em><a href="http://www.pfiesteria.seagrant.org/">Pfiesteria</a></em></strong>, a microbe that poisons fish;</li>
<li>The crowded and dirty conditions under which animals are kept makes the heavy use of antibiotics necessary to control disease. These chemicals can be transferred up to food chain and we don&#8217;t know if they might cause us harm;</li>
<li>The overuse of antibiotics can cause microbes to evolve resistance to them;</li>
<li>There is the ethical issue among cruelty to animals, because the environment they live their whole lives are very stressful and dirty, and the way theiy&#8217;re killed is not the least pain possible;</li>
</ul>

<li>There is the controversy wether if it is healthy or not to eat meat. Environmentalists say it is not, but some doctors say it is;</li>
<li>If we eat meat, we consume much more energy, water and soil resources, and therefore, we increase our <a href="http://timeforchange.org/what-is-a-carbon-footprint-definition">carbon <strong>footprint</strong></a>. In fact, researches estimate that beef requires 16 times more fossil fuel energy and creates 24 times more greenhouse gas emissions than a mixed diet of vegetables and grains.</li>
<li>Some animals require more resources than others. Producing eggs and chicken meat requires the least space and water, whereas producing beef requires the most. In fact, to produce 1kg (2,2 lb) of food protein for milk, eggs, chicken, pork and beef; beef needs 20kg of food, 245 m² of land, and 750 kg of water; pork needs 7,3 kg of food, 90 m² of land, and 175 kg of water; for eggs production, chicken needs 4.5 kg of food, 22 m² of land, and 15kg of water; chicken needs 2.8kg of food, 14 m² of land, and 50 kg of water; and to produce 1 kg of milk, a cow needs 1,1kg of food, 23,5 m² of land, and 250 kg of water. Therefore, when we eat meat, we don&#8217;t eat just the meat, but also the resources necessary to produce them.</li>
<li>Meat is less energy efficient than a vegetarian diet, and <strong><a href="http://www.harcourtschool.com/activity/science_up_close/314/deploy/interface.html">pyramids of energy</a></strong> explain that. Each time energy moves from one trophic level to the next, as much as 90% is lost. In a few words, if we feed grain to a cow and than eat beef from the cow, we lose most of the grain&#8217;s energy to the cow&#8217;s metabolism. Energy is used up as the cow converts the grain to tissue as it grows, and as the cow uses its tissues and respires on daily basis. The lower in the food chain we take our food sources, the greater the proportion of the sun&#8217;s energy we use, and the more people Earth can support</li>

<p>Scientists developed <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_vitro_meat">lab grown meat</a>, a new way to produce artificial meat. This way, people will still be able to eat meat and there will be no animal cruelty or use of natural resources. However, some questions still remains&#8230; who would eat it? Many people say their not comfortable with the idea of eating something that is not natural&#8230; in this way of thinking, is <a href="http://aboutenvironment.wordpress.com/2009/04/05/genetic-modified-organisms/">transgenics</a> being considered natural food?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The genetic modification of organisms started with the <strong><a href="http://aboutenvironment.wordpress.com/2009/04/05/green-revolution/">green revolution</a></strong>, when it was necessary to modernize agriculture to increase food production. The GMOs promise to increase nutrition and the efficiency of agriculture while lessening impacts on the planet&#8217;s environmental system. However, they also may pose risks that are not yet well understood, and this concern has given rise to protests around the globe from consumer advocates, small farmers, environmental activists, and opponents of big business.</p>
<p>The genetic modification of crops and livestock is one type of <strong><a href="http://www.safe-food.org/-issue/ge.html">genetic engineering</a>,</strong> a process whereby scientists manipulate an organism&#8217;s genetic material in the laboratory by adding, deleting, or changing segments of its <strong><a href="http://www.dnaftb.org/">DNA</a></strong>. GMOs are organisms that have been genetically engineered using recombinant DNA, genetic material patched together from the DNA of different organisms. In this process, scientists break up DNA from multiple organisms and then splice segments together, placing genes that produce certain proteins and code for certain desirable traits -like rapid growth, disease and pest resistance, or higher nutritional content &#8211; into the genomes of organisms lacking those traits. An organism that contains DNA from another species is called a transgenic organism, and the genes that have moved between them are called transgenes. <p>Genetic alteration of plants and animals by humans is not something very new. <a href="http://www.accessexcellence.org/RC/AB/BC/Gregor_Mendel.php">Mendel </a>was actually the first one. However, there is a difference between Mendel&#8217;s GMOs, selective breedings, and the ones from genetic engineering, and it lays is on the technique:</p>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.biology-online.org/2/12_selective_breeding.htm">Selective breeding</a> mixes genes from individuals of the same or similar species, while with recombinant DNA technology, scientists mix genes of organisms as different as viruses and crops, or spiders and goats.</li>
<li>Selective breeding deals with whole organisms living in the field, and genetic engineering involves lab experiments; it deals with genetic material apart from the organism.</li>
<li>While traditional breeding selects from among combinations of genes that come together on their own, genetic engineering creates the novel combinations directly.</li>
<li>Traditional breeding changes organisms through the process of selection, while genetic engineering is more akin to the process of mutation.</li>
</ul>
<p>The impacts of GM crops are many, however, there is no study or research yet to prove them, nevertheless, some of these consequences have been already seen in some places. Eitherway, the concerns are:</p>
<ul>
<li>That the new foods might be dangerous for people to eat, since the transgenics are a mix of genes of different species. Apparently speaking, transgenical food is the same, however, genetically speaking, they&#8217;re different from eachother despite the fact that the genes of the transgenes are the same in all transgenic. That happens because the place on the transgenics DNA where the intruders gene is put is not aways the same. The genetic engineering haven&#8217;t found a way to do that yet. Therefore, the consequences that these new DNA combinations might cause to our organisms are still unknown;</li>
<li>That pests would evolve resistance to the supercrops and become &#8220;superpests&#8221;;</li>
<li>That the transgenes would be transferred from crops to other plants and turn them into &#8220;superwheeds&#8221;;</li>
<li>That the pesticides (insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides) used become stronger and stronger to fight pests, and pollute the water, the air, and the <a href="http://aboutenvironment.wordpress.com/category/soil/">soil</a>.</li>
<li>That transgenes might ruin the integrity of native ancestral races of crops;</li>
<li>That the transgenics monocultures might reduced biodiversity, because many fewer wild organisms are able to live in monocultures;</li>
<li>That natural seeds might disappear, substituted by GM;</li>
<li>That food supply might be dominated by a few large agrobiotech corporations that develop GM technologies. Those corporations would be <a href="http://www.monsanto.com/">Monsanto</a>, <a href="http://www.syngenta.com/en/index.html">Syngenta</a>, <a href="http://www.bayercropscience.com/">Bayer CropScience</a>, <a href="http://www.dow.com/">Dow</a>, <a href="http://www2.dupont.com/DuPont_Home/en_US/index.html">DuPont</a>, and <a href="http://www.basf.com/group/corporate/en/">BASF</a>;</li>
<li>Much of the research into the safety of GM organisms is funded, overseen, or conducted by the corporations that stand to profit in their transgenic crops are approved by regulators.</li>
</ul>

<p>Knowing about the possibilities of these problems, critics argue that we should procced with caution, adopting the <strong><a href="http://www.jncc.gov.uk/page-1575">precautionary principle</a></strong>, the idea that one should not undertake a new action until the ramifications of that action are well understood. In a few words, we could think of GM as a medicine, a medicine that might &#8220;cure&#8221; all our problems. However, if we look at the side effects on it&#8217;s package leaflet, well&#8230; they&#8217;re pretty bad&#8230;</p>
<p>People of different cultures have reacted differently to GM. European consumers have expressed widespread unease about possible risks of GM technologies, so their governments demand that GM food is labeled as such. In the US, however, consumers have accepted the crops approved by US agencies, and they don&#8217;t realize how much of their food contains GM products. Yet, there are still many things to be studied and thought&#8230; that&#8217;s polemic that has to be discussed.</p>
